A masked stranger offers to reveal an Egyptian queen's lost tomb...and Amelia Peabody and her irascible archeologist husband, Radcliffe Emerson, are intrigued, to say the least. When the guide mysteriously disappears before he tells his secret, the husband-and-wife team sail to Thebes to follow his trail, helped-and hampered-by their teenage son, Ramses, and beautiful ward, Nefret. But before the sands of time shift very far, all will be risking their lives foiling murderers, kidnappers, grave robbers, and ancient curses. And the Hippopotamus Pool? It's a legend of war and wits that Amelia is translating, one that alerts her to a hippo of a different type-a nefarious, overweight art dealer who may become her next archenemy!

The Hippopotamus Pool edition by Elizabeth Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Since this is my second time reading the adventures of Amelia Peabody Emerson, most of what takes place is not a surprise, but you tend to forget details (or at least I do!). Ms .Peters never fails to entertain, which is why I'm sure I will be reading this series more times. Not only are these books thoroughly entertaining, they are also educating. As Barbara Mertz (Peters' true name) was an Egyptologist, she knew her subject matter. I would encourage readers of any age to try this series, as Ms. Peters kept the series rated PG, Her exclusion of explicit love scenes and inapproprIate language speaks highly of her intelligence and writing skills, The first time through this series, I felt that "The Last Camel Died at Noon," with its highly unusual plot, was my favorite, but, with the addition of David and the return of Walter and Evelyn, I'm now sure that "The Hippopotamus Pool" is it. That could certainly change, the more I re-read the series!

The Hippopotamus Pool edition by Elizabeth Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Witty writing and fantastic character development combine to make this book an enjoyable reading experience. The interactions between the various characters, including family members, enemies, friends, and employees provide great reading entertainment. The vivid and detailed descriptions of early 1900's Egypt, will make you feel as if you are taking a trip down the Nile with the fun and quirky cast of characters. I highly recommend this book which is filled with humor, history, adventure, mystery and romance. Great fun !
Who is the culprit who is it that is going to help them are there really two games one that wants to threaten in the other ones to help them? Read on my friends And enjoy.
Elizabeth Peters weaves some fantastic tales and is certainly up to snuff on her time period knowledge and of course she is well versed and educated in Egyptology. I have seen many exhibits in a number of U.S. and European museums and so am somewhat familiar with the names and dynasties Ms. Peters is talking about so that really adds to my enjoyment of her books. And of course Amelia Peabody is every woman's hero! The parasol as a weapon is inspirational...she has them specially made!

The one thing that I do not like is the weird beginnings of the last two books I read where they are talking about how they found unpublished manuscripts and so forth. It really detracts from the story and is unnecessary I think.
Like the slums, described by Amelia, of Cairo and Luxor this tale has many tangles, the most surprising of which, I am shame faced to admit is one we regular, faithful, Dear Readers, should have seen coming. I shan't spoil it, just know you will be delighted, as always, with the ride.
I simply cannot get enough of the Peabody-Emersons! Ms. Peters penchant for comedy, sarcasm, and intelligent conversation is amazing. Her villains are cunning, revolting, and likeable at the same time. I'm even in love the cat Bastet and the cat Anubis, she has given them personalities of their own, each unique and mysterious...as cats should be. 😺😼😾😹
Good book, but bad kindle version. Got thru 2 chapters, but much was confused because each chapter had 3 blank pages, and the previous page text did not continue on the one after the blank, so unclear how much was missing. I tried changing font size, same problem. Missing pages 6, 12,16, 38, 56, 60 at large font size, maybe 16 to 20 poin.
Having read the entire Peabody series over the years, I am thoroughly enjoying re-acquainting myself with the characters and the history involved this extraordinary cast of characters. You find quite a few inconsistencies as you read the books back-to-back, but they are fun and informative, if you enjoy Egyptology. I have been eagerly awaiting a final book for the past couple of years that wraps up the family sage, as it were, but I read that Ms Peters (Dr Mertz) passed away a while back. There is a new book coming out in the not-too-distant future that I hope will permit closure for the many fans of Amelia and Emerson's adventures. Good reading for any and all.
